It is the simple intimacy of tragedy – summed up in the journalist’s confession that he was 32 – that makes this story so memorable. I can only regret that English has so few pronouns and genders – all through the story, the fullest possible deployment of the few we do have has given a grandeur and wonder that cannot be easily equalled.

I shocked, however, to learn that the paparazzi – usually so keenly aware of the possibilities of their surroundings – should have camped outside the homes of several floors. have they not been made aware that floors do little except remain in the lowest part of the room, motionless and insensate. Perhaps, however, there is a concern amongst the press that many, if not all of these floors, will become mezzanines. If this should ever occur and the paparazzi fail to record it, they would not forgive themselves – and our deepest sympathies would be with them. In light of this, may they remain ever vigilant, and camp outside the homes of several ceilings as well.

I am comforted to know that they are on the job.
